Comparing water quality valuation across probability and <scp>non‐probability</scp> samples

چکیده

We compare water quality valuation results from a probability sample and two opt-in non-probability samples, MTurk Qualtrics. The samples differ in some key demographics, but measured attitudes are strikingly similar. For models, most parameters were significantly different across yet many of the marginal willingness to pay similar samples. Notably, for non-marginal changes there differences by samples: values always greater than sample, as Qualtrics up about 20% improvement. Overall, evidence is mixed, with similarities

Economic valuation of coastal water quality improvements in Tobago

The quality of the coastal waters is now a major environmental issue in Tobago due to its role in supporting the economically important tourism sector and for safeguarding public health. In this paper we report the results of two choice experiments designed to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) for an improvement in coastal water quality for two groups of beach recreationists: snorkellers and no...

Water Quality Prediction, Mechanism, and Probability Network Models

In an ideal world, decision makers would have access to perfect predictions of the impacts of their actions at any spatial/temporal scale and any level of substantive detail. In the real world, scientific predictions are uncertain, and resources are limited. In an ideal world, decision makers would have the time and inclination to acquire perfect knowledge of outcomes. In the real world, decisi...

Comparison and verification of bacterial water quality indicator measurement methods using ambient coastal water samples.

More than 30 laboratories routinely monitor water along southern California's beaches for bacterial indicators of fecal contamination. Data from these efforts frequently are combined and compared even though three different methods (membrane filtration (MF), multiple tube fermentation (MTF), and chromogenic substrate (CS) methods) are used. To assess data comparability and quantify variability ...

Comparing Suffering Across Species

Moral life often presents us with trade-offs between the sufferings of some individuals and the sufferings of others. Researchers may need to consider, for example, whether the suffering imposed on animals by a certain line of medical experimentation justifies the relief that the resulting discoveries may bring to (human or non-human) others. Often in such cases, the suffering of some individua...

External Validity of Contingent Valuation: Comparing Hypothetical and Actual Payments.

Whilst contingent valuation is increasingly used in economics to value benefits, questions remain concerning its external validity that is do hypothetical responses match actual responses? We present results from the first within sample field test. Whilst Hypothetical No is always an Actual No, Hypothetical Yes exceed Actual Yes responses. A constant rate of response reversals across bids/price...
